Printing Problems and Solutions

Screen printing, the eternal resting place of so many Covert Coolers.  Forever shamed by a single color logo, and a damp warehouse with the smell of stale woodchips from the paper factory next door.  For years this was the sad fate of every Covert Cooler.  All the excitement and ambience of this great product lost to the mundane concept of a one or two color logo.  How can a product with the vibrancy of the Cover Cooler suffer such a horrible endeavor? And how was it to be liberated?  The answers would lay in wait until the spring of 2007.

Scott Wells, owner and creator of the Covert Cooler,  soft-sided cooler that covertly fits inside the shoe pocket of your golf bag, began to at look alternative printing options for his product, what resulted was a unique spin-off of the classic heat transfer printing method.  “I needed to create a way to print multiple color logos on dark 600 diner polyester.  Screen Printing was not an option due to its expansion and contraction of the fabric during printing.  Sublimation only works on light color fabrics.  Fiber-loc is simply unaffordable.  Heat transfer was the only option.”

What Wells created was a six step transfer process that could completely adhere any image to the black fabric of the Covert Cooler.  The results are astonishing.  Westy Foss proprietor of the Gotta-Grip was one of the first to utilize Wells process.  “The fabric we use for the Gotta-Grip is similar to his (Wells).  I have searched high and low for printing methods and I have never seen anything quite as brilliant as Scotts.”

What makes this process unique is the price.  “I can create a full 4 color image 6” by 4” in a quantity of 250 pieces for as little as $1.88 a print, and it can be printed on almost any fabric,” Wells states.  By utilizing this process Wells hopes encourage distributors to think outside of the box in regards to printing.  Wells parted by saying, “I want people to understand how affordable full color printing can be, and to have the ability to offer it to their customers at a price that is reasonable.”
